Back Pain

Back pain can refer from a variety of structures in the spine and associated tissues, including intervertebral discs, ligaments, muscles, joints, and nerve roots. The back is a sensitive structure, with several curves essential for weight distribution and deep core-muscles that offer important structural support to the spine. Cervical (neck), thoracic (mid back) and lumbar (low back) segments can all be troublesome areas. However, due to the increased demand of the lumbar spine to weight-bear, the lower back is a common site of pain, and results in 180 million lost working days per year, as well as costing the health serves approximately -1.6 billion per annum.

Back pain can result in significantly reduced movement, and function, along with chronic pain. McTimoney Chiropractors offer a non-surgical treatment of back pain by focusing on manual therapy applied to the spine and associated structures to reduce pain and increase movement.

Deborah Cain McTimoney Chiropractor offer highly skilled and experienced practitioners for the effective treatment of back pain, to help improve your function and reduce your pain.

Neck and Shoulder Pain

The neck and shoulder are both sensitive structures with intricate anatomy. Furthermore, both structures sacrifice having the structural stability of some of the other joints in the body, for the extra mobility needed at these parts of the body. Quite often, shoulder pain can refer from problems in the neck, due to the closely connected muscular and nerve supply in the shoulder, which originates from the neck.

Neck pain can affect people of all ages for a variety of reasons. Commonly, neck pain can develop in the desk-based workers, who adopt a poor sitting posture, with a -pokey chin- for prolonged periods of time. Over time, this culminates in several problems including muscle imbalance and increased curvature of the neck, causing excessive strain on joints and soft tissues, and ultimately pain. In some cases, this can even result in irritation of the nerves which supply the shoulder, causing shoulder pain.

Whiplash is a traumatic injury that usually affects individuals involved in road traffic accidents, causing rapid and forceful movements in the neck. This can cause damage to the joints, ligaments and soft tissues around the neck, and can be very painful and functionally limiting.

Deborah Cain McTimoney Chiropractor offer highly skilled and experienced practitioners for the effective treatment of neck and shoulder pain caused by various conditions, to help improve your function and reduce your pain.

Pain, discomfort and stiffness in joints

Pain, discomfort and stiffness from troublesome joints can affect us all, regardless of our age, gender, of lifestyle choices. Our joints are vital for maintaining normal movement and independent function. Consequently, any problems in our joints causing pain or stiffness can be very limiting and challenge our independence. Pain and reduced function in these joints can result from various causes, whether it is traumatic injury to the joint structures, development of a long-term chronic condition, or those conditions which develop insidiously without known cause.

Chronic (long-term) joint pain can affect all of us, regardless of our age. In the UK, 8 million people suffer with osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis becomes more prevalent as we age. Before the age of 45, osteoarthritis typically affects males. Conversely, females typically suffer first onset after 55 years of age. Osteoarthritis is a painful condition that results in -wear and tear- in the protective cartilage and bony joint surfaces, and inflammation and thickening of the joint capsule. This condition typically effects the weight-bearing joints in the body such as the hip, knees, and spinal joints, causing pain and stiffness. Consequently, it can be very painful to continue with an active lifestyle without appropriate management of the condition.

Regardless of the cause of your joint pain or stiffness, chiropractic practice offers a non-invasive approach to reducing pain and regaining functional independence. Deborah Cain McTimoney Chiropractor offer highly skilled and experienced practitioners for the effective treatment of joint pain and stiffness caused by various conditions.

Muscular Aches

Chiropractic practice involves various techniques including manual therapy to help address muscle or myofascial pain. The skeletal muscles in the body function to provide support to joints and to initiate and control movement. Muscles are innervated by lots of sensory nerve receptors, meaning that muscles are very sensitive to mechanical stresses such as stretch and compression, chemical processes, and damage to tissues. Consequently, muscle aches are commonly related to increased tension in the muscles, overuse, or muscle injury from sport, general exercise, or physical work. Muscle pain onset usually occurs during the activity causing harmful stimulus to the muscles, or just following.

Acute muscle strains often occur as a result of over-exertion during exercise or demanding physical work. When this occurs, some of the muscle fibres within the muscle become damaged, resulting in focal pain in one muscle, stiffness, bruising and swelling. Muscles can become painful and ache as a result of being over-worked. Typically, this is a result of posture abnormalities, such as muscle pain in the back of the neck, shoulders or lower back that occurs in desk-based workers who spend prolonged periods in poor sitting postures. This position causes these muscles to lengthen and work hard in order to help support you in this poor position.

Muscle aches may also develop from other causes, such as:

  • Stress
  • Fascial tension
  • Tendon damage/injuries

Regardless of the cause of you muscle aches, pain or damage in muscles can often result in them going into spasm and becoming tight. This often results in the formation of tender, -knotted- areas called trigger points, which can cause chronic pain and stiffness. Chiropractic Treatment is an effective method of assessing and treating muscle pain and tension caused by a variety of reasons.

Commonly, onset before the age of 45 typically affects males, whereas first onset in females usually occurs over 55 years of age.
